What does holistic healthcare look like in practice, in our modern world and busy lives?

I know for me at times it has been a little bit random and “grab-bag”.  In my own healing journey I have tried many different modalities, spending time and money when I have it here and there.  I’ve long had a dream to be able to offer people truly integrated wellbeing services that see each person as unique and blend clinical best practice with holistic principles.

Well here it is.  It’s not in a little white picket cottage as I first imagined, but online.

I have teamed up with four professional women, each leaders in our fields, to offer you a way to wellness that you can access little by little each week, wherever you and your ipad or computer or smart phone are hanging out.  On the team we have Dr Karen Coates, an integrative physician specialising in women’s health, Carolina Rossi, our naturopathic dietician, Kate Martin our exercise guru, myself for the mind-body link and Hannah is our practice manager.

We have created a 7 week online wellbeing program, “Connect 4 Health”, where you can access videos, health briefings, a personalised nutrition and movement plan as well as psychological reflection processes to get you from where you are now (tired, stressed and over it?) to where you want to be – reconnected with your true self, wellness and vitality for life.

Dr Karen Coates, MD.

Karen’s transformation from a shy young girl hailing from the western suburbs of Sydney to an internationally recognised Healthbird and author evolved gradually.

Her mother, Fay, states that as a child she was no trouble at all until she turned 38.

It was about then that Karen discovered she had a gift for speaking and that a lot of people wanted to hear what she had to say.

Before then Karen had powered though a medical degree, studied obstetrics and was exhausted after delivering 1000 babies, including two of her own (help requested).

Moving from conservative General Practice in Australia’s political heartland of Canberra because of summer heat, she landed in Queensland to pursue her interest in gardening and herbs. She believes it was because of this connection to the earth that she was headhunted by the general Manager of Australia’s leading lifestyle retreat to chaperon the medical aspect of their program development.

Some of her medical friends were worried when she started growing milk thistle in her backyard, but she assured them she could cite at least 3 research articles proving they were safe to eat and had impressive health benefits.

A brown belt in the mixed martial arts craft of Escrima, Karen ensures that the Healthbirds team stays on focus to deliver their amazing lifestyle and wellness program based on real life, real science and research-based blend of medicine with nature.

She enjoys pawing over the latest medical research at unsociable hours and gets really excited when journalists and magazine editors phone her to talk about her favorite health topics.

Karen can now indulge her passion for speaking in workshops locally and across the globe. Her enthusiasm for dark chocolate is infectious.

Deborah Jackson, Registered Psychologist

Deb provides a foundation of stress resilience and soulful inspiration for our Healthbirds community.

Managing a chronic illness and a demanding Sydney corporate career saw Deb take up meditation, ecstatic dance, journaling and generally letting her inner wild child dance around the fire.  She left the big smoke behind and re-invented herself as a go-get-em psychologist and stress-melting specialist.

She draws on life experience, common sense and a dash of women’s intuition to reconnect you with deep wellness and balance in life.

A Registered Psychologist with stacks of extra training in all things heart-based and holistic, she is equally at home in lectures on the neuropsychiatric consequences of serotonin deficiency and researching the science behind Tai Chi and Yoga.  A solid and calm presence with you in the dark, worried or stuck places we all find ourselves in at times, she lights up at a chance to connect you with your inner strengths, joy and motivation for life.

Providing wellness programs and counseling at Bond University as well as her private psychology practice keep Deb off the streets when she’s not hanging with the Healthbirds.

She shares Karen’s passion for dark chocolate and bright colours.

Carolina Rossi, Dietician/Nutritionist (APD/ND)

Carolina is our powerhouse nutritionist. In her former life she infused energy and wellness into Brazil’s national sporting teams. She now infuses her passion for everything food into your Healthbird’s program.

But this tall slim woman from Brazil did not always look like a catwalk model. Carolina’s journey included a stint as an overweight and unhappy young dietician etching her career in the megacentre of plastic surgery, Sao Paulo. Applying the principles of common sense and sound science she will share with you the secret of how she transformed herself into a modern day swan.

Along the way, Carolina married her classical dietician degree with naturopathic training, resulting in a nutritional program designed to cultivate more energy for you and support biochemical pathways to better health.

She can often be found powerwalking her way along the foreshores of Kirra Beach, and enjoying an early morning breakfast meeting with her Healthbirds team.

Katlyn Martin, Fitness Manager and Holistic Personal Trainer

Katlyn is our migratory healthbird. After cutting her teeth on the fitness industry in Australia she moved to the UK to work and study at the University of East London. She earned her reputation as a Coaches’ coach.

Being satisfied with the improved fitness of the Brits, she left their shores and was distracted for a time in Asia. Before it was fashionable, Kate talked her way into a Thai Kickboxing training camp on Ko Tao as the only female member of the Muay Thai community. She returned to Aus with her trademark set of pink boxing gloves and a drive and motivation to share her passion for movement. All class members were well behaved.

Moving on from Fitness Manager of Australia’s award winning Lifestyle retreat Kate now connects with clients, teaching balance between Yin and Yang and the correct technique to land a good right hook.

But it’s OK, if you tell Kate it’s been a while since you have moved, she will listen and start you gently. After experiencing the effects of adrenalin burnout Kate now balances her life between Yoga, Healthbirds and completing a Bachelor of Health Science in Nutritional Medicine and Naturopathy. and yes … she can now say no and take it slow.

Hannah Jessup, Admin Extraordinaire

Your go-to girl for all things admin, Hannah would rather be looking through the lens of her Nikon camera than at a computer screen. But dedication, a commitment to making a difference and a realization that photography is not a high paying profession as well as her passion for health and wellness brought her to the team.

Hannah ran away from home at 19 to embark on a journey of self discovery in Sydney. She returned to Queensland an accomplished photographer, PA and website manager.

The youngest member of your team, Hannah also keeps Healthbirds in touch with the current challenges of being a twenty-something woman in today’s world.

She adores her dog, Dexter and also dabbles in surfing and weddings.
